THE DEVIL YOU KNOW IS BETTER THAN THE ANGEL YOU DON’T KNOW

‘The devil you know is better than the angel you don’t know.’ How true is this statement? I know you might have heard this statement over and over again, and you might be wondering why most people use such a statement whenever they are trying to discourage someone from making a major decision from something unpleasant; mostly in relationships where one of the partners is constantly inflicting pains on the other.

You see someone in a troubled relationship go to someone else – either his/her friends or family members, to seek for an advice concerning what they should do in such an unpleasant situation and the next thing you’ll hear from them will be something like, ‘just bear it, you know the devil you know is better than the angel you don’t know and there’s no guarantee that the next one you might meet might be any better than him/her.’

This is one way some close friends and family members discourage their wards and themselves from making a positive decision that would affect their lives whenever they’re going through any sort of challenging situation.

What does a devil does? A devil always makes one feel miserable, dejected, frustrated, suicidal, pained etc. so no matter how one would want to paint the devil in a good light, a devil is still a devil: whether it’s a known devil or an unknown devil. They always bring pain and sorrow and nothing good always comes from a devil.

People that always make such statement are those that are scared of the unknown and would chose to rather be in an unpleasant situation and environment irrespective of the degree of harm such environment might be inflicting on them.

There was this lady whose boyfriend always beat her black and blue at any slight provocation. She would go to her friends and make a complain to them, but instead of her friends to give her a good advice on what to do, they would start telling her that she might not find anyone just like him should she decide to live and rounded everything off by saying that same deceptive statement; ‘the devil you know is better than the angel you don’t know.’

Just because a guy has money and spends on you is not a license for him to treat you anyhow or for you to keep stomaching his ill treatments. The lady went back and continues tolerating her violent rich boyfriend excesses until a particular event happened that led to the girl losing one of her eyes as a result of her guy’s violent action. Though the guy was arrested, but the lady in question could hardly get her sight back on that one eye.

Before you let someone deceive you or you deceive yourself with such a statement or whatever statement you use in preventing yourself from making any form of decision that would take you from any violent or uncomfortable situation, understand that an unpleasant situation never goes by itself, and that a devil is always a devil irrespective of how well anyone would want to paint him.

Don’t keep stomaching any type of violent or unpleasant situation because you’re scared of the unknown. The fear of the unknown should not make you keep yourself in any form of unpleasant situation or violent environment. Life in itself is a risk and we must be willing to take that risk whenever possible and be ready to liberate ourselves from any thing we consider unpleasant in us and around us.

So the next time you hear somebody use such a statement on you so as to make you undecided about a particular ill situation, cut them short and tell them, ‘a devil is still a devil and never brings anything good to anyone.’ That’s the gospel truth.
